In observance of the Independence Day holiday, trash and recycling collection will be delayed one day and City of Kansas City, Mo., offices will be closed Monday, July 4. The 3-1-1 Action Center will also be closed for the holiday. Residents may still call the 3-1-1 Action Center at 311 or 816-513-1313 and use its Interactive Voice Response system for assistance with City services during this time by following the phone prompts.
Residents who usually have Monday trash collection will receive this service Tuesday, July 5. Residents who usually have Friday trash collection will receive this service Saturday, July 9.
The period after the holiday, July 5-9, is a “no tag” period for trash collection in the City. During this time, residents may set out more than two bags of trash without tags. This is done to accommodate the extra trash that is usually accumulated at this time.
For more information about solid waste collection services, visit http://www.kcmo.org/trash or call the 3-1-1 Action Center at 311 or 816-513-1313.
Media inquiries about trash and recycling should be directed to Dennis Gagnon, public information officer, 816-513-2659.

KCFD Reminds Residents to Leave Fireworks to a Pro
The City of Kansas City, Mo., Fire Department reminds residents that fireworks are illegal within the city limits. Residents are advised to leave the use of fireworks to trained professionals.
On a typical Independence Day holiday, there are more fires reported in the U.S. than on any other day of the year. Fireworks account for more than half of those fires.
The following statistics are from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA).
In 2009, fireworks caused:
more than 18,000 reported fires;
two civilian deaths;
an estimated $38 million dollars in property damage;
10,000 injuries that were treated in U.S. hospital emergency room departments. Two out of every five victims treated were under the age of fifteen.
Throughout the Kansas City metro, residents have numerous opportunities to enjoy a professional fireworks display sponsored by local organizations. The KCFD wishes residents a safe and happy Independence Day.
