City becomes more bicycle-friendly by adding 352 lane miles of bikeway signage

As the weather continues to warm, the City of Kansas City, Mo., has begun installation of 352 lane miles of bike routes and "share the road" signs throughout the city. Located primarily on quiet residential streets, the signs provide the beginning for a 600-mile bikeway system in Kansas City. The signage will not only help guide cyclists as they travel, but they also will help cyclists identify which streets are bicycle-friendly for travel.


Installation of the signs will complete the third phase of a three-phase project that started in 2002 with the adoption of the Bike KC plan. Phase 2 was completed in 2010 when the City replaced water inlets, sewer grates and utility covers with ones that are safer for cyclists along the initial 176-mile route. This work is part of a $1.9 million federal Congestion Mitigation Air Quality grant received by the City.

Details of the new route system can be found on the City's website at www.kcmo.org/bikekc. In addition to the signed routes, the City has constructed 24 lane miles of bike lanes, nine lane miles of sharrows and 65 miles of trails. When fully implemented, the City will have 600 miles of on-street bicycle facilities and 230 miles of shared use trails.

"The City is committed to becoming a platinum-designated bicycle-friendly community by 2020," said Sherri McIntyre, Public Works director. "Adding bike facilities like the route signage is a priority for the City. Implementation of this project has provided the most cost effective means of constructing the facilities by leveraging federal and state funds with local funding."

Public Presentations for Westport High & Middle This Saturday

Kansas City Public Schools (KCPS) has invited two short listed teams to present proposal updates for Westport High and Middle on April 6, 2013. Each short-listed team will be allotted time for its presentation and for Q&A from the meeting participants.  This is a great opportunity for local stakeholders to not only learn about the proposals and to ask questions, but also to provide feedback to the district.

Curbside Leaf and Brush Pickup This MONDAY!

The city will be picking up leaves and brush this coming Monday, April 1st.  

Here are the rules:

Sacks and bundles should be curbside by 7 a.m. on the scheduled day of collection.

No more than 20 sacks and/or bundles per household.

Sacks and bundles must not weigh more than 40 pounds each.

Use only paper lawn debris sacks. No plastic bags.

If you seal sacks, use masking tape only; do not use plastic or duct tape.

No grass clippings. No trash.

All branches must be bundled. Branches must not be more than 3 inches in diameter.

Bundles of branches must not be more than 2 feet in diameter and not more than 4 feet long.

Use twine or jute rope to tie bundles; do not use wire or plastic tape.

If wet weather is forecast, cover sacks/bundles with clear plastic.

 

Complaint procedures:

If sacks and bundles are not collected on the scheduled day, residents must call the 3-1-1 Call Center within 24 hours. To report service related issues, the 3-1-1 Call Center can be reached by calling 311 or 816-513-1313.

St. Patrick's Day Run This Saturday

The 35th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Run will be this Saturday, March 9th…and they are expecting participation to be somewhere around 4000 runners!

The run starts at Westport Road and Mill Street at 10:00 a.m. and heads south to 43rd Street, east to Warwick, north to 38th, then east another couple of blocks to Gillham, north to Linwood, west to Pennsylvania and south back to Westport Road.

There will be street closures as the runners approach each area.  Streets will be reopened by KCPD as soon as runners clear each area – and the entire run should be complete by 11:30 a.m.

So…there will be limited access to the Broadway Westport and Costco/Home Depot areas for about 1½ hours on Saturday morning during this run!  

City offers post-snow trash, brush solutions

The City of Kansas City, Mo., will offer a range of trash, recycling and tree waste disposal options to Kansas City residents due to trash pickup delays caused by two recent winter storms.

Trash service resumed after a one-day suspension on Tuesday, Feb. 26. Trash is being collected this week on the current delayed schedule, with trash normally collected on Thursday picked up on Friday, March 1 and trash normally collected on Friday picked up on Saturday, March 2.

Residents on last week's routes whose trash and recyclables were not collected were allowed to place up to four bags of trash on the curb without tags this week. In addition, residents whose trash and recyclables were missed this week will be allowed to place up to four bags of trash on the curb without tags next week. Residents whose trash and recyclables were not collected both weeks may place up to six bags of trash curbside next week.

Please note, trash crews are aware of which blocks did not receive service and will only collect excess trash from blocks they were unable to get to during the past two weeks.

Three leaf and brush centers will be open the next three weekends for free disposal of woody debris caused by the winter storm. The City's main drop-off centers are located at 1815 N. Chouteau Trafficway and 10301 Raytown Road and will be open to residents living in Jackson and Cass counties only. Clay and Platte county residents may not use these centers due to the state and federal quarantine caused by the Emerald Ash Borer.

Clay and Platte county residents may drop off their leaf and brush at a temporary leaf and brush drop-off center, the Pleasant Valley Road Athletic Complex, 6401 NE Pleasant Valley Road.

The facilities will be open to Kansas City residents on March 2, 3, 9, 10, 16 and 17 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
