www.kcmo.org

In observance of the New Year’s Day holiday, City of Kansas City, Mo., offices and the 311 Call Center will be closed on Monday, Jan. 2 and curbside trash and recycling collection will be delayed one day. Residents who usually have Monday collection will receive the service on Tuesday, Jan. 3. Residents who usually have Friday collection will receive it on Saturday, Jan. 7.

Oh Rats!

Recently, we've had a few reports of sewer rats in the neighborhood. These guys are disease carrying rodents and are not welcome in Southmoreland. Fortunately, the city has a free rodent abatement program, and they can come out if you find rats on your property. Call the Health Department directly at 816-513-6010 or contact the 311 Action Center, if you are finding evidence of rats in your home.  Here are several suggestions for preventing a rat infestation in your home, from KCMO.org

Prevention
Rats need three things to survive, and will be a problem until these three things are no longer available: food, water, and shelter. If you have a rat problem, take the following steps to get rid of the rats; if your neighbor has a rat problem, taking the following steps can keep their rat problem from becoming your rat problem:
  • Food (anything rats might consider food):
    • Keep food in galvanized metal containers
    • Keep trash and garbage cans in tightly covered metal containers
    • Pick up garbage and trash in yards immediately
    • Remove pet food after the pet has finished eating, and pick up pet droppings
    • Clean spilled seed from under bird feeders
    • Wipe any spilled food off the clothing and faces of babies and bedridden adults
    • NEVER leave a bottle with a baby in the crib overnight
  • Water:
    • Repair leaking pipes
    • Don't let rainwater collect in containers, window wells, etc.
    • Repair broken sewer pipes leading from your home
  • Shelter:
    • Clean up debris like abandoned cars, used appliances, brush piles, etc.
    • Cut any high weeds, especially around house foundations
    • Store lumber at least 18 inches from the ground
    • Clean out basement and attics
    • Seal off openings in foundations, retaining walls, and basements
    • Replace all broken windows
    • Use concrete or metal when rat-proofing; while rats can burrow through concrete, it is much easier for them to gnaw through wood.

Trash Pick-Up Delayed, City Offices Closed

In observance of the Independence Day holiday, trash and recycling collection will be delayed one day and City of Kansas City, Mo., offices will be closed Monday, July 4. The 3-1-1 Action Center will also be closed for the holiday. Residents may still call the 3-1-1 Action Center at 311 or 816-513-1313 and use its Interactive Voice Response system for assistance with City services during this time by following the phone prompts.

Residents who usually have Monday trash collection will receive this service Tuesday, July 5. Residents who usually have Friday trash collection will receive this service Saturday, July 9.

The period after the holiday, July 5-9, is a “no tag” period for trash collection in the City. During this time, residents may set out more than two bags of trash without tags. This is done to accommodate the extra trash that is usually accumulated at this time.

For more information about solid waste collection services, visit http://www.kcmo.org/trash or call the 3-1-1 Action Center at 311 or 816-513-1313.

Media inquiries about trash and recycling should be directed to Dennis Gagnon, public information officer, 816-513-2659.

KCFD Reminds Residents to Leave Fireworks to a Pro

The City of Kansas City, Mo., Fire Department reminds residents that fireworks are illegal within the city limits. Residents are advised to leave the use of fireworks to trained professionals.

On a typical Independence Day holiday, there are more fires reported in the U.S. than on any other day of the year. Fireworks account for more than half of those fires.

The following statistics are from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA).

In 2009, fireworks caused:
more than 18,000 reported fires;
two civilian deaths;
an estimated $38 million dollars in property damage;
10,000 injuries that were treated in U.S. hospital emergency room departments. Two out of every five victims treated were under the age of fifteen.
Throughout the Kansas City metro, residents have numerous opportunities to enjoy a professional fireworks display sponsored by local organizations. The KCFD wishes residents a safe and happy Independence Day.

City continues to dig out after blizzard

City Communications Office
City of Kansas City, Mo.
www.kcmo.org

City of Kansas City, Mo., snow removal crews assigned to primary and arterial streets made considerable progress overnight, after snow stopped falling. As of this morning, most primary and arterial routes have tight snowpack and some exposed pavement. With heavy accumulations removed, the snowpack and ice will be salted in an attempt to break up the snowpack.

Residential snow routes have deep snow as a result of heavy snow totals and drifting. Recognizing that the deep snow will challenge smaller snowplows assigned to residential snow routes, larger snowplows will be diverted to residential areas as possible today.

The City has approximately 250 snowplows working in response to the winter storm.

Motorists are asked to minimize travel during this cleanup effort in order to allow snow removal crews and emergency responders greater ability to perform duties.

Should motorist venture out onto City streets, they are advised to drive with extreme caution as high winds forecast for today will likely create drifting in areas that were previously cleared.

The City’s Emergency Operations Center remains activated at a level two and personnel representing key City departments are present and working together to monitor the event and coordinate activities

Phases I and II of the City’s Snow Ordinance remain in effect. As outlined in the Snow Ordinance, motorists parked on assigned Emergency Snow Routes face the possibility of vehicles being ticketed or towed. Vehicles without adequate tire tread that get stuck on a major thoroughfare can also be ticketed.

In residential areas, motorists are asked to park vehicles off-street if possible. If a vehicle must park on-street, the following parking practice is being requested:

-On streets that run north/south, please park on the west side of the street.
-On streets that run east/west, please park on the north side of the street.

Residents wanting to report slick spots or missed streets are advised that while crews continue to run snow routes today, it is assumed that all streets are slick. Only after all snow routes have been run does the City’s 3-1-1 Action Center accept requests for slick spots and missed streets. It is anticipated that this will be no earlier than Thursday afternoon. For updates, visit www.kcmo.org .

The City has been informed that KCP&L crews are on standby alert and additional restoration materials have been staged at various locations throughout their service territory. KCP&L crews have managed to limit the storm’s impact on power outages, as few Kansas City residential and business customers experienced lost power during Tuesday’s blizzard conditions.

Requests for removal of tree limbs from the rights-of-way should be directed to the City's 3-1-1 Action Center, at 311 or 816-513-1313. The 3-1-1 Action Center will open at 8:30 a.m. this morning.

Media inquiries about ice and snow removal should be directed to Dennis Gagnon, public information officer for the Public Works Department, 816-513-2659.

Sunday, January 23, 2011

City Reminds Residents to Clear Sidewalks

The City of Kansas City, Mo., is reminding residents, businesses and organizations of the need to clear sidewalks adjacent to their homes and offices. The City’s Municipal Code requires persons owning or occupying property on streets, boulevards and highways to remove snow and ice from the sidewalks in front or alongside their property.

While the Code does provide provisions for fining residents, the City is requesting that the clearing of sidewalks be done as a neighborly act to help pedestrians who rely on walking as a means of transportation to get to school, work, and home.

City crews have been clearing sidewalks at City facilities and continue to clean up residential streets that may have been missed during the recent winter storms.

Residents who wish to report slick spots or missed streets should contact the City’s 3-1-1 Action Center by either going online at www.KCMO.org/Action or dialing 311 or 816-513-1313.

Media inquiries about ice and snow removal should be directed to Dennis Gagnon, public information officer for the Public Works Department, 816-513-2659.
